Hi everyone,

I’m sorry I don’t speak Slovenian (yet), but I’d really appreciate your advice on a topic if you don’t mind.

I recently moved to Slovenia (Ljubljana) and now live in an apartment where the owner has a T2 internet contract. The owner runs some kind of large business, so T2 provides internet services for him and his business at a noticeable discount. The apartment is equipped with a T2 INNBOX G78 router. I’ve noticed two fiber cables inside the apartment with different connectors: SC APC (green) and SC UPC (blue). The INNBOX G78 uses the SC APC connector (GPON).

I work remotely, and my job requires me to use advanced security network scanners (all activities are legal). Unfortunately, I’ve found that the G78 becomes unstable when running these scanners due to the high volume of requests. I have my own router (Mikrotik RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN) that I’d prefer to use instead since it’s already preconfigured for my needs, including my network lab, and it has an SFP+ interface.

I reached out to T2 support via their online chat, but they seem reluctant to allow me to use my own router in place of theirs.

Here’s what I’m considering, and I’d appreciate your thoughts:

1. Change the ISP
- Are there any ISPs that allow customers to use their own router directly without requiring two devices (their modem/router + my router)?
- Is there any ISP that uses SC UPC instead of SC APC?
- The owner might not be happy about this, as he might (?) lose the discount. It would also be more expensive for me. However, I’m fine with any option as long as I can use my own device.

2. Use a GPON module from fs.com (GPON-ONU-34-20BI)
- It was mentioned earlier in the thread that this module works with T2, but I’m unsure about the required configuration and how T2 delivers their service (DHCP, VPN, etc.). So some guidance with configuration might be required.

3. Ask T2 to put the G78 router in bridge mode
- Not sure if they’ll agree, as they didn’t seem very accommodating during the chat. Even if they do, it still means having two devices, which isn’t ideal.

4. Something else?

I’d love to hear your advice or experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
the cheapest and most optimal option would be the third one, as in this case T-2 would only probably charge you for a static public IP address for your Mikrotik. Setting in up would be easy as DHCP is used. FS GPON module costs more than €70, and changing ISP would probably be even more expensive.
Best of luck!

Thanks a lot for your reply!

To be fair, there is not enough space in the distribution board for both devices, so I would prefer only one (photo). But at least, it feels like it's possible to achieve with T2.

What about FS GPON module, apart from pricing, is it possible to configure it manually?

Thanks!

Well, I bought two FS gpon modules right about a year ago. As a matter of fact, they were delivered just after Christmas last year, and weren't lucky with the configuration (was expecting a VLAN with a specific tag, but the darn thing was forwarded as vlan tag 0), which I didn't figure how to configure out until couple of months ago, but now the module is working for me. I sold one, and have the other one connected to USW-Aggregation, but as I understand, it should work with Mikrotiks too, although I heard there is a 'feature' which shows the port offline in case ONU doesn't sync with provider's OLT (LOS).

Thanks for sharing your experience. This option seems to be the hardest one to implement and risky as T2 might not be happy missing their hardware online. I guess I might try it as well, but it would require more knowledge and some guides.

In this country and in the EU at large, you've a (conditional) legal right to use your own equipment ((EU) 2015/2120, Uradni list RS, št. 55/23). Your gear has to meet certain technical standards, may not cause interference or damage in the ISP's network and you become responsible for technical maintenance inside your own network.

I suggest you politely remind them that this law exists, if they still refuse to cooperate, take the matter up with AKOS.

I thing buying own SFPs is complicated, couse in some areas T-2 offer gPON, 10gPON, P2P fiber or combo of tem or BRO - in BRO type is what Telekom Slovenije offer on that area.

Hi, I'll just continue in English if someone else needs this. I want to get rid of INNBOX G92 that's why I bought FS GPON-ONU-34-20BI and I already had a MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+ from before that's currently not in use.

What I did:

1. GPON SN - successfully set on FS ONT module by these instructions
2. With fibre connected I get O5 status on ONT module which means it works
3. On MikroTik with RouterOS 7.16 I don't get a successful connection. This should be possible (source1, source 2,, source 3)

Could you share a config? I see you set up a VLAN 0 but it doesn't let me.

I'm just using untagged traffic on my side for gpon - as vlan 0 should be treated. can you run tools > packet sniffer on sfp interface? just to see if there's any other traffic than your mgmt stuff...
